Art and Writing

Many times I wonder if people ever see a connection between art and writing. I've always been a fan of both, therefore many times I see where they overlap. Essentially, art is made up of the same "ingredients" we have been talking about that go into literature, only with art--it's generally left up to the audience to figure out the story. And people thought poetry was hard to construe. One of the most exciting things about art is the range of the artists' imagination, and how they embody their messages, their stories, and so on. I'll post a few pictures of some artwork that I can't help but find mentally engaging as far as visual storytelling goes. Of course, including some hero/monsteresque themes.

What do these images say to other people? Do they tell stories to anyone out there? Do you consider art to be a sufficient form of storytelling?

  1. Thanks, Emily, for that. I definitely see a connection. In fact, I think that writing IS art, even academic writing. It's like what we were talking about relative to the made thing.

I hope some other people will responde to your question.

  3. I definatly agree that there is a connection between visual art and literature. When an artist begins to produce a piture, they are inspired by something to do so. I think there is a mental process that is gone through inorder to figure out what the artist is going to express on paper. For example, the picture illustrated above came from inspiration. However visual art can also be put into literary terms. In my opinion the picture above is about the dangers on the road. Car wrecks, traffic, bikes, people walking, running all of this can be dangerous if someone is not paying attention. This is my opinion but it could be wrong. I also agree with Wendy that literature is art. It takes a lot of talent to hold a readers interest and the way a piece of literature is written must be done tastefully in order to do so.

  4. Art is by all means a sufficient tool that can be used to tell a story. In my opinion, it can be a more effective way to get a point across to its audience. To get the point of a story you have to start from the beginning and wait til the end to take in the theme. With a picture, there is a more immediate effect. Not to say that art is shallow, of course. With a deeper glance the audience gets a deeper meaning. For example, if you take a quick glance at a picture of a man with a pained face, you instantly know he is not in a happy situation. With a story, you generally have to read a few paragraphs to get a grasp of what is going on.

  5. "A picture is a thousand words." I'm sure we have all heard this expression. A single image can depict a story. Through ones imagination or perception of what we already know, the central idea, we can all relate too; one can connect to the image and interpret there own meaning. Images usually bestow a central idea or universal theme, such as the picture above. The image can be interpreted in many ways, however, the central idea deals with driving and probably something negative. Driving under the influence perhaps. The connections we form between Literature and Art help one better understand or relate to the central message. I feel that Literature and Art go hand-in-hand.
